Internet Safety Tips for Parents
You don’t need to be technologically savvy to protect your kids on the Internet. This is probably a good thing, because children seem to be one step ahead of adults when it comes to understanding technology. Unfortunately, although kids may be smart about how to use computers, they don’t understand the dangers that can lurk in chat rooms and online communication. That’s why they need parents to understand and be proactive about it. Internet safety requires communication, common sense and a good understanding of the dangers that lurk on the Web.
Computer Location and Supervision
Computers that are connected to the Internet should be placed in a central location in your home, not a child’s bedroom. This allows you to monitor activity better. Never allow children to use the Internet unsupervised.
Social Sites and Email
Activity on social sites, such as Facebook and YouTube, should be monitored closely. Take the time to read what others are posting on your child’s profile. You should also have access to your child’s email account and do random checks to see who they are contacting.
Teach
Teach your children how to be safe online. Make sure they understand they should never give out any personal information over the Internet. Also, make sure they understand that they should never meet someone they met online without permission or download pictures or other items from unknown sources.
Encourage Communication
Encourage your children to come to you about any strange or unusual activity they experience on the Internet. Fear of punishment is a big factor that can restrict this area. Therefore, make sure that your child is not punished for revealing this information.
Watch Credit Card and Cell Phone Usage
Credit cards and cell phones can also help you monitor what your child is doing on the Internet. Watch your credit cards for any unauthorized use. Check to see what phone numbers are coming in to your child’s cell phone or your home phone. Check out any numbers that you don’t recognize.
Privacy
Monitoring your child’s Internet usage is not a violation of their privacy anymore than keeping an eye on them at a shopping mall would be. Explain to your child that they can have privacy in their lives, but not on the Internet. If they complain that you are treating them like a child, remind them most workplaces monitor Internet and email usage of their employees.
