avast! Free Antivirus is perfect for people who send e-mails and surf popular websites. avast! is a package of applications that aim to protect your computer from a possible virus infection or other malware threat. If you use it correctly, and in combination with other programs such as data backup utilities, it will significantly reduce the risk of your computer being attacked or infected by a virus, and thus the risk of losing important or private data.

These help files have been created to help you understand how the program works as a whole, as well as describing the properties and functions of its component parts. We assume the user has knowledge of basic terms and the basic skills needed to use the Windows operating system. If you are not familiar with terms such as “folder”, “file”, or “window”, or what it means to “activate a window” or “click a button”, we recommend that you consult the appropriate user manual before proceeding.

Based on the award-winning avast! antivirus engine, avast! antivirus contains all of the features you would expect in a modern antivirus program. It incorporates anti-spyware technology certified by West Coast Labs’ Checkmark process, as well as anti-rootkit and strong self-protection capabilities, but now provides even faster scanning with improved detection ability. It contains several real-time “Shields” which continuously monitor your email and internet connections and check the files on your computer whenever they are opened or closed.

avast! antivirus now also comes with a completely revamped user interface for easier scanning. avast! Pro antivirus offers a number of additional features, including a script shield and a process virtualization module, while avast! Internet Security comes with an antispam filter and built-in firewall. Once installed, avast! runs silently in the background to protect your computer against all known forms of malware. You don’t need to do anything else – just install and forget!

Here are some key features of “Avast! Free Antivirus”:

Core and detection:
· Antivirus and anti-spyware engine
· State of the art scanning engine provides reliable protection against viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software.

Real time anti-rootkit protection:
· Unique “on access” technology checks all kernel-mode drivers that the operating system is loading for signs of rootkit behavior. This enables even unknown rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can do any damage.

avast! Community IQ:
· Most samples we process come from sensors deployed throughout the avast! community in the Behavior shield and anti-rootkit modules. This is a unique source of data made possible only thanks to our huge user base. Most of the collected samples are analysed by a number of automated processes and only a small fraction of the samples need to be processed manually by our virus analysts.

Code emulator:
· When a suspicious executable is encountered (during both on-demand and on-access scanning), avast! is able to emulate the program’s code in an isolated environment. The code emulator is used for two purposes. First, it is used for generic unpacking. Secondly, it is used in the heuristics engine. Technically, this is done using dynamic translation, a method much faster than traditional emulation techniques.

Heuristics engine:
· avast! features a new heuristics engine designed to proactively detect malware undetectable with normal definitions. The heuristics engine is able to cover both binary (executable) and script malware.

Potentially unwanted programs detection:
· avast! detects potentially unwanted programs, such as remote admin tools and commercial key loggers. Custom rules can be set for dealing with these types of programs.

Scanning:
· Boot-time scanner
· Allows you to scan your computer for infections before the operating system has started and before a virus can be activated (32-bit operating systems only).

Command-line scanner:
· Enables you to run a scan directly from the command line.

Wake-up for scan:
· Microsoft Windows is woken from sleep or hibernation mode, performs a scheduled scan, then returns back to sleep mode.

Scheduled scanning:
· Allows users to define the scan time and files to be scanned.

avast! Intelligent Scanner:
· Can reduce the number of required file scans by up to 80% through a white list of proven safe applications. Files identified as safe are not rescanned unless they change.

Shields:
· Behavior Shield
· Monitors activity on your computer using a number of sensors (file system, registry and network based) and reports/blocks any suspicious behavior.

· Behavioral Honeypots
· avast! sensors identify and monitor suspicious file activity on selected computers, automatically submitting files to the Virus Lab for additional analysis.

· File System Shield
· Real-time scanning of opened/executed files.

· Mail Shield
· Scans all incoming/outgoing e-mails for malware. For MS Outlook, a special plug-in is used. Other email clients are protected by a generic POP3/IMAP4/SMTP proxy. New in version 5, the proxy also supports scanning of SSL communication (gmail.com, sympatico.ca, ….)

· Web Shield
· Scans all visited web pages and checks all files, pages and java scripts downloaded from the internet. Thanks to the Intelligent Stream Scan feature, the Web shield doesn’t slow down your web browsing.

· P2P Shield
· Checks files downloaded using P2P programs. – ABC, Ares, Azureus, BearShare, Bit Torrent, BitComet, BitLord, BitPump, CZDC++, Direct Connect, eDonkey, eMule, iDC++, iMesh, Kazaa, Kceasy, LimeWire, Morpheus, Opera’s DC++, Overnet, Qtrax, Shareaza, SoulSeek, StrongDC++, uTorrent, Vuze, WinMX, Winny2, Zultrax.

· IM Shield
· Checks files downloaded while using instant messaging or “chat” programs. – AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Gadu-Gadu, gaim/Pidgin, Google Talk, ICQ, IM2 Messenger, Infium, Miranda, mIRC, MSN/Windows Messenger, Odigo, PalTalk Messenger, Psi Jabber Client, QIP, QQ, SIM, Skype, Tlen, Trillian, WengoPhone, XFire, Yahoo! Messenger.

· Network Shield
· Provides protection against network-based viruses. The module has two main components: a URL blocker, designed to block malicious URLs (as defined by the Virus Lab), and a lightweight intrusion-detection system.

Updates:
· Smart virus definition updates
· Incremental updating system minimizes the size of regular update files.

· Fast application of updates
· New format for the virus definition file speeds up application of updates into avast! 5.0 and reduces demand on CPU/memory, resulting in uninterrupted computer use.
· New format for the virus definition file means faster updates and reduces demand on CPU/memory, resulting in uninterrupted computer use.

Gaming:
· New Silent/Gaming Mode automatically detects full-screen applications and disables pop-ups and other on-screen notifications without degrading security.

Optimized for latest Intel Core i7 CPUs:
· Critical sections of the avast! scanning engine code have been optimized to deliver unrivaled performance on the latest Intel chips.

CPU optimization:
· Multi-threaded scanning optimization
· avast! runs faster on new multi-core CPUs. A new avast! feature allows the splitting of large individual files between cores, accelerating the scanning process.

Green computing:
· Reduced demands on the disk drive result in lower energy consumption.

Miscellaneous:
· avast! iTrack – Real-time graphic scanning reports.
· Graphical user interface – Easy to navigate graphical interface.
· Automatic processing – Infected files are processed automatically without requiring user instructions.

Requirements:

· Processor Pentium 3,
· 128 MB RAM,
· 100 MB of free hard disk space

Limitations:

· 30 days trial period. After the trial period you need to register.

What’s New in This Release:

· solved a problem that could lead to disappearing of the avast service
· Behavior Shield: solved a minor stability issue (aswSP.sys) + solved a Win7 issue

For anyone who owns a computer, the prospect of being infected with computer viruses is both dreaded and hated. Its effects appear the moment the computer starts doing strange things like slowing down or not being able to open some files and programs. Not only is it so annoying, it can also lead to a waste of precious time and effort. If left unchecked, it could destroy many things from important files and documents to the computer unit itself.

Generally, computer viruses are malwares or malicious programs that are designed to damage or harm computers. They can come from a variety of sources like file attachments in emails and the use of diskettes in transferring files between computer units. Aside from that, it can also be acquired in file sharing networks. Websites that offer downloads are also very likely sources of computer viruses.

Different types of computer virus exist and each one produces different effects from producing a silly message on your screen to damaging data files and disks. The most common of these computer viruses include: boot sector viruses, multi “ partite viruses, parasitic viruses, link viruses, companion viruses and macro viruses. They may produce different effects but all of them share one common characteristic. All of them must be executed in order to be operational.

One of the most common mistake of many amateur computer users is that they tend to generalize everything malware as a virus. It’s important to know that differences between the different malware types as this can help a lot especially in the cleaning and fixing afterwards.

Trojans are different from computer viruses because of the fact that they don’t replicate. They are usually masked as interesting programs and files. However, once they are run, they will do a completely different task from what it is supposed to do. Trojans are used by many hackers to gain information on control on other people’s accounts and computers.

Worms, on the other hand, are malwares that are usually spread through security holes in network connections. They are different from computer viruses because they don’t need programs in order to spread. Instead it scans computer networks for security holes which it infiltrates and then replicates in. Then it starts scanning other computers to be infiltrated in again.

Once a computer virus is detected on your unit, many things can be done in order to resolve it. The important thing that needs to be done is to evaluate the type of virus and the extent of infection. This helps in identifying what files and programs are affected as well as minimize its spread to others. Once the infection is properly diagnosed, the proper “cure can be easily administered.

Protecting your computers against viruses is important if you want to avoid the hassle of dealing with their occurrence. The use of updated anti- virus programs is one of the most effective ways to do so. Regular scanning of files and disks must be done in order to minimize the risks of being with one. Also being extra careful especially in receiving e-mails, transferring files and downloading programs, is greatly recommended.

Computer viruses may be deadly but with the right knowledge and methods, its risks can easily be minimized and reduced.

PC Tools iAntivirus for Mac
PC Tools iAntivirus guards against Mac only malware, including viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and adware. Unlike some Mac antivirus software, PC Tools iAntivirus doesn’t cover Windows-based malware, which helps keep performance costs and system impact low but may not be the best bet choice in a mixed Mac/Windows environment. PC Tools iAntivirus is free for home (and home office) use and currently supports Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.5 only. An unobtrusive and efficient Mac antivirus software option that dedicated Mac users will want to try. Currently in beta.
Simple but Elegant
Like other PC Tools offerings, iAntivirus steers clear of bloat – providing exactly the features you’d expect in an antivirus software as unobtrusively as possible. For example, there’s an option to disable the dock icon if you want to keep things tidy. But if you do leave the iAntivirus dock icon enabled, you can drag and drop files and folders there for quick and easy scans.
PC Tools iAntivirus features realtime protection, scheduled quick scans, and scheduled updates. Monitoring mode keeps iAntivirus working truly in the background, ideal for those who don’t want to be disturbed by alerts or anyone trying to conserve laptop batteries.
PC Tools iAntivirus detects and removes Mac-specific malware only. This can be either very good or very bad, depending on your perspective. While a Mac-only focus keeps iAntivirus running lighter and faster than other Macintosh antivirus software, it also means a Mac user could inadvertently share files infected with Windows-based malware. Macro viruses, for example, aren’t detected by iAntivirus – corporate users sharing Office documents between Windows and Mac users will want to make sure macro virus protection on both sides is enabled.
PC Tools iAntivirus is currently in beta, supports Intel-based Mac OS X v10.5 only, and is free for home (or home office) use.

Intego VirusBarrier X5: Mac Antivirus Software Review
It’s pretty hard not to like Intego VirusBarrier X5 with the eye candy interface it sports. Fortunately, VirusBarrier not only looks cool, it performs well too. VirusBarrier provides realtime signature-based and behavior-based scanning and guards against both Mac-specific and Windows-based malware. You can, however, turn off the scanning for Windows-only malware if you wish. At $70 for a single license, VirusBarrier is one of the pricier Mac antivirus options available – but it’s also one of the best.
Full Featured; Streamlined Performance
With some antivirus developers, a Mac antivirus offering is an afterthought. But at Intego, Mac security is their core business and that focus translates into a higher quality product. Intego closely monitors security events impacting Mac OS users, thus they tend to be one of the first to add detection for new Mac malware and Mac-vulnerable exploits.
Intego VirusBarrier X5 sports a sleek, modern interface that’s an improvement over the boring box windows of most other programs. The fresh look is backed up with on-access realtime scanning, a Trusted Zone to exclude files/folders from scans, and scans for iPod and iPhone touch malware. VirusBarrier can scan for Windows malware, which helps to prevent inadvertent spread in mixed environments. Mac-only users can disable the Windows malware scanning if desired. Email scanning (on send/receive) is also included, along with a quarantine feature, behavior analysis, scanning of compressed files and archives, and all the other features we expect to find in our Windows antivirus protection but too seldom find in Mac antivirus software offerings.
System performance is excellent; VirusBarrier maintains a very unobtrusive background presence – though it would be nice if the dock icon could be disabled during install. On the plus side, you can drag new or suspect files to the dock icon for a quick scan.

McAfee VirusScan for Mac
McAfee VirusScan for Mac (formerly known as Virex) can be used as a standalone virus scanner for Mac or integrated with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) for enterprise management. McAfee VirusScan for Mac supports Mac OS X 10.4.6 (Tiger) or later and Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). The universal binary can be installed on either PowerPC or Intel-based Macs. Integration with ePO requires ePO version 3.6 (patch 2) or above.
Enterprise Ready Protection
Given the abundance of backdoors and keyloggers distributed via the Web today, not knowing what’s happening on all your networked machines adds even more risk to the enterprise. And one limitation of existing Mac antivirus solutions is they don’t typically lend themselves to network-wide management. McAfee VirusScan for Mac (aka Virex) gets high marks for its integration capabilities with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator, enabling admins to pre-configure policies and get access to scan reports. In addition, McAfee VirusScan for Mac can be installed via the standard setup interface or silently via command-line. McAfee VirusScan for Mac can pull updates direct from McAfee (the default) or configured to pull from a designated internal FTP server.
McAfee VirusScan for Mac includes detections for exploits, viruses, trojans, worms, and spyware that threatens Macs, PCs, and Unix systems. On access scanning provides realtime protection while drag and drop scanning facilitates a quick check of newly downloaded files.

ClamXav – - Free Mac Antivirus Software
ClamXav is based on the open source ClamAV virus scanner. Popular among open source fans, in practice ClamAV lags behind the detection capabilities of commercial antivirus software. For Mac users, this may not be a significant limitation given that there are far fewer malware impacting the Mac OS. If you’re looking for free Mac antivirus software, ClamXav is certainly a virus scanner worth trying.
Capable Enough
The free ClamXav antivirus scanner offers limited realtime scanning, the ability to scan email, on-demands scans, and support for multiple languages: Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Spanish and Taiwanese. ClamXav fully supports Mac OS X v10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard), with limited support for v10.3 (Panther) and 10.2 (Jaguar).
Because ClamXav is based on ClamAV, detection of Windows-based malware is also included. However, ClamAV in general tends to be behind the curveball when it comes to detecting malware. This may be less of an issue for Mac users given that there are fewer threats impacting the Mac OS. Still, if you’re a corporate Mac user or looking for up-to-the-minute protection (or even up-to-the-month), ClamXav may not be your best bet.
ClamXav Sentry offers limited realtime scanning; designate the folders you want it to watch and instruct ClamXav Sentry to load when your computer is started. Of course, this means malware that gets dropped into folders not watched by ClamXav Sentry won’t be detected unless you perform a manual scan of the system and manual scans via ClamXav can be tediously slow.
ClamXav is by no means the most capable Mac antivirus scanner and it’s definitely not the fastest. But for the price of free, it’s worth taking for a test drive.

MacScan Antispyware for Macs
MacScan v2.6 from SecureMac provides spyware detection for Mac OS X v10.2.4 and higher. Built-in support for Firefox v3 provides cookie cleaning and limited Web surfing protection. MacScan also guards against Mac-specific keyloggers and spyware-related trojans targeting the Mac OS. MacScan retails for approximately $30 for single use or $50 for up to three Macs via the MacScan Family Pack.
Focused Features
MacScan from SecureMac is designed to guard against spyware-related threats targeting Mac users. Support for Firefox 3 provides cookie cleaning and limited Web file scanning. In addition, MacScan can clean up Internet history folders and the cached files from previous websites visits in Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. MacScan doesn’t do any better at cleaning up Internet tracks than do the features already included in these browsers, but if you happen to switch between browsers often, it does provide a single point through which to clear your tracks.
MacScan doesn’t guard against cross-platform threats such as macro viruses, or any non-spyware-related Mac malware. Unlike many of the other traditional Mac antivirus offerings, MacScan also doesn’t guard against Windows-based malware. However, MacScan does protect against the types of threats that pose the greatest security risks: keyloggers, backdoors, remote access Trojans, and spyware.

Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac
For Mac users seeking the most complete protection against the inadvertent transmission of Windows-based malware, Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac is an excellent choice. But for Mac users most interested in defending against threats targeted specifically at the Mac, Intego VirusBarrier may be the best option.
Uninspired Windows Focus
Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac includes the basics: realtime, on-demand and email scanning. Also included is signature-based vulnerability scanning to help guard against known security exploits. OS X 10.5 users will also get the Norton Dashboard Widget, a threat level alerting widget that has little use to Mac users given that the listed threats all targeted Windows.
Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac seems uninspired at best. It’s not that one expects antivirus protection to be sexy, but Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac seems to be more geared to protecting downstream users from Windows malware passing through a Mac computer, rather than protecting Mac users.
Symantec bills Norton Antivirus for Mac as “The #1 selling antivirus solution for the Mac”. But as the fine print reveals, that’s number one based on “NPD Group’s retail Top-Selling Business Software list”. Aren’t ‘retail’ and ‘business software’ somewhat mutually exclusive?
Bottom line: Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac is an adequate solution for universities and other mixed use environments where the containment of Windows-based malware is the focus. However, those interested in protecting their Macs would do well to consider Intego VirusBarrier instead.

Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for MacNorton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac is designed for Mac users who routinely dual boot into Windows or who run Windows in a virtual environment on their Intel-based Mac. Given that Norton AntiVirus 11.0 for Mac seems more geared to protecting Windows users from malware relayed through a Mac, one has to wonder if it’s not a bit of overkill to offer both together. Wouldn’t one or the other do a perfectly adequate job on their own?
Tough to Justify Price
Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac is a rebranded copy of Norton AntiVirus 11.0 for Mac and Norton AntiVirus 2008 for Windows. Norton AntiVirus 11.0 for Mac supports Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or higher and Norton AntiVirus 2008 supports Windows Vista (Home/Business/Ultimate), Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Home/Pro) and Windows XP Media Center. If you boot to Windows and Mac OS X about equally, Norton AntiVirus Dual Protection for Mac might be a cost effective means to secure both. But if you tend to favor one OS far more than the other, you may want to purchase a dedicated product specifically for that operating system and save a few dollars by installing a free antivirus scanner on the other.

Anti-virus software typically uses two different techniques to accomplish this:

Examining files to look for known viruses by means of a virus dictionary

Identifying suspicious behavior from any computer program which might indicate infection

Most commercial anti-virus software uses both of these approaches, with an emphasis on the virus dictionary approach.

Virus dictionary approach
In the virus dictionary approach, when the anti-virus software examines a file, it refers to a dictionary of known viruses that have been identified by the author of the anti-virus software. If a piece of code in the file matches any virus identified in the dictionary, then the anti-virus software can then either delete the file, quarantine it so that the file is inaccessible to other programs and its virus is unable to spread, or attempt to repair the file by removing the virus itself from the file.

To be successful in the medium and long term, the virus dictionary approach requires periodic online downloads of updated virus dictionary entries. As new viruses are identified “in the wild”, civically minded and technically inclined users can send their infected files to the authors of anti-virus software, who then include information about the new viruses in their dictionaries.

Dictionary-based anti-virus software typically examines files when the computer’s operating system creates, opens, and closes them; and when the files are e-mailed. In this way, a known virus can be detected immediately upon receipt. The software can also typically be scheduled to examine all files on the user’s hard disk on a regular basis.

Although the dictionary approach is considered effective, virus authors have tried to stay a step ahead of such software by writing “polymorphic viruses”, which encrypt parts of themselves or otherwise modify themselves as a method of disguise, so as to not match the virus’s signature in the dictionary.

Suspicious behavior approach
The suspicious behavior approach, by contrast, doesn’t attempt to identify known viruses, but instead monitors the behavior of all programs. If one program tries to write data to an executable program, for example, this is flagged as suspicious behavior and the user is alerted to this, and asked what to do.

Unlike the dictionary approach, the suspicious behavior approach therefore provides protection against brand-new viruses that do not yet exist in any virus dictionaries. However, it also sounds a large number of false positives, and users probably become desensitized to all the warnings. If the user clicks “Accept” on every such warning, then the anti-virus software is obviously useless to that user. This problem has especially been made worse over the past 7 years, since many more nonmalicious program designs chose to modify other .exes without regards to this false positive issue. Thus, most modern anti virus software uses this technique less and less.

Other ways to detect viruses
Some antivirus-software will try to emulate the beginning of the code of each new executable that is being executed before transferring control to the executable. If the program seems to be using self-modifying code or otherwise appears as a virus (it immeadeatly tries to find other executables), one could assume that the executable has been infected with a virus. However, this method results in a lot of false positives.

Yet another detection method is using a sandbox. A sandbox emulates the operating system and runs the executable in this simulation. After the program has terminated, the sandbox is analysed for changes which might indicate a virus. Because of performance issues this type of detection is normally only performed during on-demand scans.

Issues of concern

Macro viruses, arguably the most destructive and widespread computer viruses, could be prevented far more inexpensively and effectively, and without the need of all users to buy anti-virus software, if Microsoft would fix security flaws in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office related to the execution of downloaded code and to the ability of document macros to spread and wreak havoc.

User education is as important as anti-virus software; simply training users in safe computing practices, such as not downloading and executing unknown programs from the Internet, would slow the spread of viruses, without the need of anti-virus software.

Computer users should not always run with administrator access to their own machine. If they would simply run in user mode then some types of viruses would not be able to spread.

The dictionary approach to detecting viruses is often insufficient due to the continual creation of new viruses, yet the suspicious behavior approach is ineffective due to the false positive problem; hence, the current understanding of anti-virus software will never conquer computer viruses.

There are various methods of encrypting and packing malicious software which will make even well-known viruses undetectable to anti-virus software. Detecting these “camouflaged” viruses requires a powerful unpacking engine, which can decrypt the files before examining them. Unfortunately, many popular anti-virus programs do not have this and thus are often unable to detect encrypted viruses.

Companies that sell anti-virus software seem to have a financial incentive for viruses to be written and to spread, and for the public to panic over the threat.
